Zimmerman Architectural Studios City Lights Headquarters

Located on the Menomonee River Valley, the campus once known as the West Side Works for the Milwaukee Gas Light Company is rich with local history. The original construction on the site began on our building, the furnace building, in November of 1902. Within a little over two months, in the dead of winter, the building structure was skinned and roofed, a truly ingenuity feat for that time. Years after the building was used as a coal plant, the building was recommissioned to be used as a truck terminal and warehouse. The windows were bricked and boarded up and the building turned to disrepair. Zimmerman took on this project head on to bring back the historic charm that it once was. The windows and brickwork were restored and the roof was renovated to preserve all of the original ornate truss work. While maintaining the original openness of the building, we are able to host community events and meetings. Zimmerman has well over a century of experience and our City Lights Headquarters reflects our philosophy to design for the future while respecting the past.
