Milwaukee County Zoo – Macaque Holding Facility + Monkey Island

Zimmerman was selected to generate a design for a new Macaque holding facility and improvements to the “Monkey Island” viewing platform at the Milwaukee County Zoo.  The project is designed to allow visitors to view Macaques both in an outdoor and indoor environment. The existing design, produced in the 1950’s, limited visitors to outdoor viewing of Macaques almost exclusively as the indoor holding area was below grade.  The existing structure will be demolished from ground up with the remaining lower level re-used as partial basement with a mechanical room.  The new facility will also have an attached deck which allows zoo patrons enhanced viewing opportunities of the macaques.
