Mount Mary University Bloechl Recreation Center
Mount Mary University, in an effort to modernize its campus and enhance its image, engaged our team to design a new student recreation and athletics competition center totaling in excess of 26,000 square feet. The institution’s athletic programs were previously housed in historic Caroline Hall, a structure built near the turn of the 20th Century. The Bloechl Center was designed to accommodate university level competition intramural basketball, volleyball, and additional fitness needs. The new facility houses a full-size gymnasium that can be configured for NCAA basketball or volleyball competition. The gymnasium is divisible into two half courts through the use of dividing curtains which facilitates intramural and fitness activities. Locker and training rooms, athletic director and coaches’ offices, a fitness center, yoga and dance space, and a concession stand are also housed in the Bloechl Center. The gym is used by Mount Mary University students and the general public. A 41 foot clearance was designed into the facility to meet NCAA recommendations for collegiate volleyball competition. When set up for basketball or volleyball purposes, the field-house provides seating for 850 spectators. Exterior design blends into the surrounding campus architectural aesthetic – established by Mount Mary’s Neoclassical Notre Dame Hall.
