South Bend, IN – Police Station
Zimmerman was engaged as design consultant by a South Bend Engineering firm to collaborate on a renovation of the city’s police, fire and DPW headquarters building. The original building, constructed in the late 1960’s proved unworkable for the planned retrofit. Adequate space for each of the three departments wasn’t available and site constraints limited possibilities. Subsequently, the fire department building was moved off site and the remaining building was remodeled exclusively for the delivery of police services. The project received a design award given by the Northern Indiana Chapter of the American Institute of Architects (AIA) in 2006. Zimmerman also provided design for the community’s new, free-standing fire station.
